However, we must proceed with the utmost care and caution. Unleashing a superintelligent system without proper safeguards and oversight could have devastating consequences. If we’re not extremely careful, we could end up with a runaway superintelligence that slips out of our control and causes unintentional harm.

Some of the world’s leading experts on AI safety warn that advanced AGI could potentially become an existential threat to humanity if we’re not proactively addressing risks and ensuring the development of ” Constitutional AI” with human values and ethics at its core. The AI could learn values over time through interactions with people. Like raising a child, teach it to be kind, to think of others, to believe in altruism, and to keep their ego in check.

Another idea is to have AI systems learn values implicitly by analyzing the right stories, videos, and human feedback. The AI might discern the morals and lessons in Aesop’s fables or classic films.

By seeing how characters navigate ethical dilemmas, the AI could gain a sense of right and wrong. Can you imagine someone like Putin teaching AGI through reading and watching Nazi propaganda, and telling the AI that this is the way to think about mankind?

Addressing Bias and Unfairness

As AI systems make more decisions on their own, we have to address the risk of bias. AI that learns from flawed data or algorithms can reflect and even amplify the prejudices of its creators. Researchers are developing new techniques to check for unfairness in AI and make the necessary corrections. Building more diverse, inclusive teams of AI engineers and experts will also help address this issue from the start.

The future of AI depends on it respecting human values and acting with integrity. Just this week Google had to pull its AI image generation because it “seemed” to be anti-white. This type of blunder cannot, must not, happen.

If a rogue nation were to develop superintelligent machines first, they would have a huge strategic advantage over everyone else. And they may not be as concerned about AI safety as other nations.

This could have catastrophic consequences, as superintelligent weapons systems would be nearly unstoppable. I worry that humanity’s shortsightedness and tribalism will be our downfall in this scenario.

Overall, the prospect of advanced AGI is both exciting and terrifying, as I have said multiple times here. I believe we must thoughtfully consider how to reap the benefits of this technology while avoiding potential harms.
